In fact, a recent study took 28 women and had them complete a 16-week intervention attending 60 minute Zumba dance classes three days a week. After the study, that was later published in the US National Library of Medicine, it was found that not only did participation in Zumba improve health and physical fitness in the participating women, but their motivation to exercise increased.

An article on Time.com published results from a study showing that those participating in Zumba were able to exercise at approximately 80 percent of their maximum heart rate, and 60 percent V02 max.
But, before you think that you can just go to your weekly salsa dancing class and call it good, think again.
While salsa dancing is a good form of exercise, Zumba is better, according to a study published in the Journal of Sport and Health . The findings of this particular study found that compared to a salsa dancing class, Zumba yielded a higher heart rate response. The findings were compelling enough for the researchers to characterize Zumba as an intermittent and higher intensity activity than salsa dance. It was also noted that Zumba participants received larger physiological benefits than their salsa dancing friends.
And just like any high intensity workout, Zumba can help reduce your risk of heart disease, lower your blood pressure and bad cholesterol, as well as boost your good cholesterol.
